Nigerian Recruitment Tragedy

In a follow-up to a March story, the Federal Government has reassured relatives of the deceased and victims of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment stampede that they should not give up hope of securing automatic employment with the agency. According to The Sun News, the delay was due to an administrative bottleneck.

Mr. Abba Moro, Minister of Interior, assured journalists in Abuja that the government was working to formalize the jobs so that it would not cause any problems for the beneficiaries in the future.

When asked for an update on President Goodluck Jonathan's pledge made shortly after the incident, the minister said, "At this stage, I can only claim that the Federal Government's commitment to the implementation of Mr. President's directive on the victims of the Immigration recruitment tragedy is on track and complete."

“Arrangements have been finalized to ensure the automatic jobs of three relatives of the deceased victims and the wounded hospitalized survivors. We will put the directive into effect as soon as possible.

“What seemed to be a delay was the fact that the directive had to be placed along administrative processes in order to have a smooth engagement of those officers that would not have the responsibility of having to make explanations in the future if they were not carried out in accordance with laid down regulations. “However, I want to assure you that the order is unquestionably one that must be carried out,” he said.

Approximately 21 job applicants died on March 15, this year, during a nationwide recruitment drive. Following public outrage, the Senate formed a committee to investigate the incident; their report is still pending.
